Introduction to FrithCraft

FrithCraft is the outgrowth that resulted from exploring the Norse Paganism concept of Frith, my service to the Goddess Frigga and combining it with knowledge gained studying the path of Witchcraft for two decades. What resulted was a realistic world view for the modern age and a body of philosophy that has begun to serve my life and feed my soul immensely. It is my hope that by sharing this with those who are called to read it, I may help others to discover their soul truth and method of practice that may currently be struggling.

As I began to meditate on and accept these philosophies as  my soul truth, I began to be shown efficient and successful ways to access my intuition, satisfy my need for a fulfilling spiritual practice and to achieve my goals, both magically and mundanely.

The heart of FrithCraft is the pursuit of practices, rituals and spell work which assist in achieving Frith, as a state of being and maintaining Frith between your egoic self and your inner divine God Soul. Frith as mentioned before is a concept that comes from Norse Pagan, Northern Pagan and Asatru Traditions.

I came across this concept in 2010 and it intrigued me, resonated deep within my soul, and spurred me to learn as much as I could about it. There is not a lot of information out there about the concept of Frith and in some circles it is a highly debated topic. I have no wish to enter into these debates. It is my personal opinion that every being has their own soul truth and tools which help them to contact the divine and fulfill their spiritual needs. For me the concept of Frith was a unifying theory (which I came to with an expanded understanding and application revealed during meditation and communion with my patron Goddess Frigga) which worked to focus my world view and magical/spiritual practice and therefore, despite academic or historic debate has made it a valid theory with practical application to my spiritual journey. For this reason, and this alone I will hold to and share this concept in hopes that it may help others.

For those not familiar with the word Frith, I will review what little information I have come across in my studies, in order to familiarize you with the basis of my expanded understanding of this concept. Frith is defined as “peace” in many resources. In this instance, “peace” refers to the peace, security, and happiness on feels within one’s family and community.

Frith is described by many authors as an obligation that when upheld, causes peace and stability to grow within your life. When Frith is upheld your actions can create an environment in which these energies can grow and flourish. It helped to create an inviolable sense of unity and fostered solidarity within communities and families. Frith was used to describe the state of being in which peoples involved in kinship relationships existed.

According to the Heathen Handbook published by Woden’s Folk Kindred: “Frith was the highest goal of community” the authors of this informative volume continue to explain “Frith has meanings that go beyond peace to include security, safety, contentment and most importantly the joy of being at home among one’s people” . As I continued to dig through resources, looking for any mention of Frith possible, I came across a more in-depth description in the book Norse Goddess Magic This tome’s author describes Frith as fruitful peace, joy, loyalty love and goodwill; which required one to actively support and protect each member of your kin. Under this definition the author soliloquizes that Frith is the love that Sjofn (a Norse Goddess, noted as being a Goddess of Love and Handmaiden to Frigga), seeks to inspire in people’s hearts and that it lives at the very heart of a person’s soul as the seat of their humanity. Being a well-spring of their thoughts, desires, and feelings it helps to create the basis of society, civilization, and humanity itself.

Continuing to research and study I discovered that author after author defined Frith as “peace”…but, then go on to expand its meaning to include all the good things in the world and to explain how it is a staple concept and energy to the existence of society. What struck me the most is that everyone who mentioned Frith, was that each description seemed to reach toward defining it as some ineffable energy, beyond peace, which connect beings in bonds of relationships, and that Frith could be woven between two parties. In fact, many Goddess’ are described as being “Frith Weavers”. One Goddess of note, at least for me was Frigga. Frigga is a Goddess that I had felt called by, had learned about, worked with, and eventually felt moved to dedicate my service to her.

As I found myself with more questions about Frith I turned to my patron Goddess Frigga in search of answers. I spent years contemplating, meditating on, searching, and serving Frigga in pursuit of the meaning of Frith. In small bits an expanded definition of Frith came into being. Questioning my own personal gnosis, I searched further in books and on the internet, eventually finding a quote that for me felt like validation. Within the pages of The Modern Guide to Heathenry, words jumped off the page that resonated deeply with my soul and validated what I had come to understand as Frith. According to this book: “Many folks define frith as ‘peace’ but that is not quite accurate. A far better translation of the term would be ‘right order'”.  This statement gave wings to my concept of Frith and helped to bring me to acceptance of this as a soul truth and allowed me to truly begin working with Frith and growing in ways I never imagined.
