When things in our lives aren’t going quite right, many people will tell us we have to have faith… or the new age equivalent: Everything happens for a reason and we have to stay positive. This can be incredibly difficult at times, especially when we are faced with matters of loss, survival or emotional hurt.
However, I would like to take a minute to posit a different perspective on faith. There are many different things we take on faith each day. Faith is the complete trust or confidence in someone or something, and we have many instances where we fall back on this in our lives. We take these moments of faith for granted because they are so run-of- the-mill, they don’t test our ability to have trust in something.
We go to bed each night, having faith we will wake up in the morning. We drive through an intersection, trusting that the car that is perpendicular to us will stop at the red octagon. There are so many moments in life where faith plays a part in our lives.
If we can have faith that all these little mundane moments, why is it hard to have faith that good things can happen to us. It’s my personal opinion that many times we have a hard time having faith in good things happening to us is that we do not believe we deserve good things to happen to us. I think this is something that we have been taught, not something inate within us. Society at large tells us that we must earn everything, and that certain people are “blessed” by being worthy enough to have good things happen to them.
This is such a fallacy, we are all worthy of good things happening to us. If we can have faith that the car will stop, the sun will rise, and that the world keeps on turning; then we can have faith that good is coming to us.
If you are facing loss, saddness allow yourself to feel the emotions that you have, but remember there is good out there, there are reasons for faith. Remember that you are worthy of the good things too. Let each time the sunrises, the car stops, the world turns remind you that you are worthy. Let these be keys to motivate you to take a moment and faith in something more.
This is a tough one right now. Will work on it soon..
